Shakir Rehmatullah’s was honored for his generous gift to Markham Stouffville Hospital’s Cancer ClinicCPBC honored to be a partner at the naming ceremony
A historic unveiling ceremony at the Markham Stouffville Hospital to honor Mr. Shakir Rehmatullah, President & Founder of Flato Developments Inc. for his generous donation to MSH. Canada Pakistan Business Council in partnership with Mayor Scarpitti, City of Markham facilitated the hosting of the event for the naming of the “Shakir Rehmatullah Cancer Clinic.
His generous gift will support and enhance patient care by funding the oncology program at the MSH Cancer Clinic that includes a breast health center, chemotherapy clinic, colon health services, clinical trials, and radiation consultative services.
Mr. Rehmatullah, an established businessman, developer, community builder, and philanthropist, as well as his company, Flato Developments Inc., are long-time supporters of MSH and have generously contributed towards the hospital in the past. A strong advocate of putting community first Mr. Rehmatullah is a Community Partner of the Canada Pakistan Business Council. He was the recipient of the 2017 CPBC Business Excellence award.
The Premier of Ontario, the Honorable Doug Ford was the guest of honour for the event, which was well attended by many national, provincial and municipal dignitaries including, His Worship, Frank Scarpitti, Senator Salma Ataullahjaan, MPP Khaleed Rasheed, Councillor Khalid Usman, MPP Stephen Lecce, Council General of Pakistan, the hospital’s leadership team, staff and patients. The community and business leaders gathered to honor Shakir’s contribution including a sizable presence of Canadians of Pakistani origin.
The dignitaries expressed great respect and honored Mr. Rehmatullah for his philanthropy, for everything he has done for Markham, including the Flato Markham theatre, sports teams, and other community initiatives. Shakir made the donation in honor of his father, also a philanthropist, who passed away from cancer shortly after the family arrived in Canada in the 1990s.
In his speech Mayor Frank Scarpitti thanked Premier Ford for attending this important celebration and paid tribute to Shakir calling him an extraordinary human being, for making this generous contribution: “Shakir believes in giving back so that services and facilities like this one will actually not only touch people’s lives but make their lives better.”
Mayor Scarpitti also thanked CPBC president, Mr. Samir Dossal for building bridges in the community.
Mr. Dossal in his speech spoke with passion about honoring “an amazing individual in our community. “You make us proud,” he said to Mr. Rehmatullah.
Mr. Dossal seized the opportunity to assure Premier Ford that the Government of Ontario had CPBC’s fullest support to promote business in Ontario to the world.
Suzette Strong, MSH Foundation, spoke very highly of Mr. Rehmatullah, and added, “There are simply no words strong enough to express our sincere gratitude to Shakir for sharing our vision to make Markham Stouffville Hospital a provincial leader in healthcare.”
Jo-Anne Marr, President & CEO, MSH, added that “the inspirational gift we are celebrating today speaks loudly to the trust you have bestowed on us to deliver the highest quality care to our patients, their families, and the community.”
A hospital is fundamental to any community, and in times of a medical crisis, there’s nothing more reassuring than knowing your hospital has the right equipment, facilities and doctors,” said Rehmatullah. “Anybody who cares for the community should look after the hospital, because we’re all going to need it someday.”
