The Ballroom at the Bayview Golf and Country club was filled with nostalgia, appreciation and non-stop applause for outgoing President Andy Merchant of Canada-Pakistan Business Council who decided to call it a day after 16 years of untiring leadership of the most reputable organization building business relations between Pakistan and Canada. Over 200 people including senior Govt. officials and political leaders, Dignitaries and prominent members of the local business community attended this event on Friday December 07, 2012. Besides recognizing Andy’s long list of achievements over the last two decades, the council also welcomed Samir Dossal who was recently elected after the AGM, as the new President.


Samir in his welcome address paid tribute and thanked Andy for all his contributions, acknowledged the services of the Board of Directors, Advisors and Sponsors; he laid down a roadmap for his short term and long term goals.

Tributes to Andy Merchant were paid by Senator Salma Ataullahjan, High Commissioner of Pakistan Mr. Akbar Zeb, former Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mr. Ferry De Kerckhove and CPBC’s long-time supporter and sponsor Mr. Feroze Ashraf of SNC-Lavalin, who was also awarded a special memento at the event. Mr. Farooque Dawood, Advisor and former Chairman of CPBC also spoke at the event.

Andy was presented with Certificates of Appreciation on behalf of the Mayor of Markham, Frank Scarpitti, Parliamentary Sectretary to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deepak Obhrai and former Minister of Industries, Allan Rock.

A Certificate of Appreciation was also presented to Andy Merchant by the Honourable Jim Karygiannis M.P. Scarborough Agincourt.

For his contributions and years of service to the CPBC, Andy Merchant was presented with a memento from the Board of Directors and Advisor of the Council for which he received a standing ovation.


Andy’s wife Fatima Merchant was also presented with a token of appreciation in recognition of her 24/7 support to Andy and the CPBC over the years.

Samir Dossal was presented with the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Hon. Jim Karygiannis, M.P. Scarborough Agincourt. Samir was awarded the medal in recognition of his services to the community amidst a huge applause and a standing ovation.


Both Andy and Samir thanked the guests for their support to the Canada-Pakistan Business Council.

A Vote of Thanks was presented by Dr. Elliot Tepper, Director of CPBC.
