CPBC 35th Anniversary Gala and Awards Night
The Canada Pakistan Business Council (CPBC) held its 35th Anniversary Gala and Awards night welcoming an impressive cross-section of guests to celebrate the vibrant trade relations and cooperation between Canada, Pakistan and global markets. CPBC also, to recognize outstanding individuals with awards of excellence for their contributions to Canadian Society and for strengthening and enriching our communities.
Vibrant Pakistani-Canadian diaspora celebrated another milestone as CPBC President Mr. Samir Dossal announced that bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Pakistan have exceeded well over $1 billion dollars, three years in a row! The event was well-attended by official dignitaries, government and political leaders, diplomats, prominent and influential business and community leaders, members of academia, and other distinguished guests representing the Canadian and Pakistani diaspora.
Prominent among the distinguished guests were MP Hon. Omar Alghabra, MP Hon. Rob Oliphant, MP Hon. Yasmin Ratansi, Senator Hon. Salma Ataullahjan, Consul Generals of Pakistan, Turkey and Sri Lanka, Mayor Frank Scarpitti of Markham, Mayor Dave Barrow of Richmond Hill, York Region Police Chief Eric Joliffe, former MPP Dr. Shafiq Qaadri, Chairman and Vice chancellor Brock University, Dr. Gervan Fearon, National Chairman Pakistan PolioPlus Committee, Mr. Aziz Memon, Chairman PCBC of FPCCI, Mr. S. M. Munir, CPBC Chairman Hon. Bryon Wilfert, the Ontario and Lahore Chambers of Commerce represented by Mr. Louis De Palma and Mr. Ali Mirza, Councillor Jim Karygiannis, Scarborough/Agincourt, a strong contingent of Rotarians, business leaders, CPBC sponsors, board of directors, corporate members and many more.
The evening commenced with a reception that included vibrant networking and delicious hors-d’oeuvres. Vendors at the networking reception included:
• Magnet Export Business Portal (https://magnet.today/export-business portal/)matches businesses to the right export opportunities. CPBC recently signed an MOU with Magnet and will be engaging and encouraging CPBC NEXGEN to promote Magnet as a platform for supporting exporters in Ontario.
• EA International Consulting Inc., Canada is bridging and providing best leverage to North American firms to become part of existing prestigious projects as well as be part of JV bidding for new projects in Asia and Middle East. Mr. Omar Mansoor, VP/CEO of EAi promotes properties in Pakistan and is known for doing a wonderful job of connecting Pakistani Canadians with opportunities in Pakistan.
• TWI Foods Inc. graciously handed out takeaway bags for guests generously filled with Crispy Just Baked oven fresh delicacies.
Exhibits included a colourful display of art by renowned Pakistani artist, social worker and philanthropist, Jimmy Engineer, who spreads the message of peace and harmony through his paintings.
Mr. Dossal, President CPBC, in his welcome remarks thanked the guests and expressed his delight for their ongoing support. He emphasized that building relationships, connectivity, and partnerships have been the reason for CPBC’s resounding success and the vibrancy and growth of the Pakistani community in Canada. Mr. Dossal pledged CPBC’s full support in engaging the Government of Ontario to make Ontario the best place to live and work in.
He thanked Corporate Sponsors, particularly CPBC’s longstanding relationship with RBC and recognized Mr. Imtiaz Seyid, VP, RBC for his role in engaging communities. Mr. Dossal expressed his delight in adding another feather in CPBC’s cap to have Mr. Shakir Rehmatullah of Flato Developments, one of the success stories of our community, join us as a Community Partner and to strengthen the organization. Mr. Rehmatullah, he added, makes us all proud of the wonderful work he does and for his philanthropy.
Mr. Dossal also spoke of CPBC NEXGEN’s mandate to bring together young leaders of tomorrow and the resounding success of the March workshop hosted in partnership with Ryerson University’s Diversity Institute. He emphasized the value of teamwork as his motto of “Together we can make a difference!” was bringing Team CPBC together.
Mr. Dossal announced the recent signing of an MOU with the Overseas Investor’s Commerce and Industry (OICCI) during his last visit to Pakistan.
The Hon. Omar Alghabra, MP, Mississauga Centre, acknowledged the important role that CPBC plays in building and cementing the strong ties between Canadians and Pakistanis. Mr. Alghabra talked passionately about his recent visit to Pakistan in 2017 and assured guests that the Canadian government is committed to build on the close economic relations between the two nations.
Mayor Scarpitti of Markham welcomed everyone and thanked CPBC for all the great work, for the great leadership they have shown and for leading several business missions to Pakistan and fostering business relationships here at home. Mayor Scarpitti special mentions of York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe, for the wonderful job he has done at building bridges for so many communities and the appointment of Khalid Usman from the Pakistani community as Councillor for the City of Markham and thanking Councillor Usman for the great leadership he has shown.
Mayor Frank Scarpitti graciously presented Samir Dossal a certificate from the City of Markham commending CPBC for bringing together community leaders, business professionals, thought leaders and government officials to share ideas, collaborate and strengthen relations. He thanked them for creating an environment conducive for economic growth and prosperity while building bridges, connecting diverse communities both locally and globally.
The Keynote Speaker, Mr. Aziz Memon congratulated Mr. Dossal for CPBC’s 35 years of achievement. Mr. Memon, together with 85th President of the Rotary Club of Karachi, Anjum Nisar and past president Rtn. Muhammad Ovais presented the Rotary Club of Karachi flag to Mr. Dossal. Mr. Memon highlighted the progress that Pakistan has made in its efforts to eradicate polio and he applauded the Canadian and Pakistani governments and peoples for their commitment to this cause.
Consul General of Pakistan, Mr. Imran Siddiqui emphasized the importance of quality people to people contact between business, culture, art, education and, science and technology sectors in Pakistan and Canada. He congratulated Samir Dossal and CPBC for their achievements.
Mr. S.M. Munir acknowledged Samir Dossal and commended the exceptional role CPBC plays in Canada Pakistan bilateral trade relations.
CPBC Chairperson, Mr. Bryon Wilfert thanked distinguished guests for their support and hoped that they would take away a better understanding of the great work people are doing in cementing a very important relationship between Canada and Pakistan.
